Plane motion of rigid bodies: Euler's Theorem, Chasle's Theorem, Plane motion, moments of inertia, motion about a fixed axis, compound pendulum.
General Plane motion instantaneous Centres.
Principle of Virtual work Space motion of rigid bodies: Motion with one point fixed, Inertia tensor, Principal axes, kinetic energy of rotation, Euler's equation of motion, Euler's angles, motion of a top. Lagrange's theory: Generalized coordinates. Lagrange's equations for holonomic systems, some simple application.
Hamiltonian Theory: The Hamiltonian, Hamilton's equation, Hamilton's Principle, Canonical transformations. Hamilton's-Jacobi Theory.
Readings:
1. Chorlton: A Text Book of Dynamics (Van Nostrand).
2. Greenwood, D.T.: Classical Dynamics (Prentice-Hall).

Assessment is by assignments and examination.
